ABOUT PILATES

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. During World War I Pilates began developing his method of exercise by rehabilitating  prisoners of war. He used springs from hospital beds to provide resistance for the body, later creating his own equipment using springs. In 1923, he brought his unique method of physical and mental conditioning to the US. Pilates who had a strong desire to improve his strength and physique, studied yoga and martial arts. These practices and his work with physicians led to the development of his system.
His studio in NYC attracted athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and professional dancers. Pilates' techniques became an integral part of dance conditioning. In the 60's Pilates' students began opening their own studios. In the 80's physicians and physical therapists combined Pilates' principles with current practices.
Today Pilates method is gaining more attention because people are turning to more effective, less stressful, safer workouts.
The Pilates method is a series of exercises designed to evenly condition the entire body. It is one of the safest workouts you can do. It is challenging, yet gentle on your body. The pilates method increases body awareness by concentrating on proper alignment and smooth movements. Most exercises involve several muscle groups performing smooth, continuous movements. These movements elongate, as well as strengthen and stretch all involved muscle groups. It also improves posture through proper body alignment and opens the joints. Great for arthritis sufferers. It helps to release tension for an all over feeling of well-being.

 Who should do Pilates?
Everyone! All ages and fitness levels can benefit from pilates. Because the exercises are based on movement not amount of weight you can lift, you start at your level and build from there. Most exercises can be modified for persons with specific problems, such as back and neck pain.

(The Pilates Method) "develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit." -Joseph H. Pilates, Return to Life
